The Walk Tunnel

There is only one architectural feature of its kind on the 69-acre campus with multitudes of buildings. The unique feature is the walk tunnel in the 400-building high school area.

Dr Brill and state architects agreed that it would be a long walk around the 400-building high school wing for walk access to the 300-building wing and the vocational (now called CTE) building. They agreed on a short tunnel in the 400-wing to allow shorter walk distances.

The distance for the walk tunnel is approximately 15 yards long. The tunnel connects the Palomar road to the high school row.

This is the other side of the walk tunnel as a shortcut to different destinations southbound or northbound.

There is a light in the middle of the tunnel for added safety. Above the entrance is a digital time board that can be visible as far as good vision or prescription glasses can see.

Many alumni across the decades remember the walk tunnel for different things. Kathleen Russell, ‘66, and Paul Setzer, ‘63, met in the tunnel away from staff supervision for a private moment not once, but on numerous occasions for two years. They continued to date at Gallaudet and didn't need staff supervision. They finally married. Their love story began at CSDR.

I have been affiliated with this school for almost 55 years first as a student and then as an alumnus. I recognized the low wall with the metal rails as new additions to the walk tunnel. Without having someone explain it to me, I can provide a rationale for their presence. From my observations in the 1970s and the 1990s, there have been injuries between students when they walked into each other. Worse yet, electrical carts and students collided at the corner with more serious injuries.

For safety reasons, the low wall and rails help provide extra time to students to avoid the surprise collisions.

Remember, safety is the priority at CSDR.
